So, how does all of this apply to the Autistic and problematic Autistic behavior?
Thank you for letting me build up to this point.
Left to our own devices and given the resources, an Autistic person is going to
- Gravitate to our ideal environment
- Avoid problematic environments
- Focus on our Special Interests
This is natural behavior for us.
Autistic people tend to have what Allistics would consider extreme views, due to our desire for predictability and repetition.
And we can't know what we don't know.
When an Autistic person has limited resources they are forced outside of their ideal environments frequently and challenged on their beliefs.
The most problematic ideas they have are confronted and in that moment they don't know what to do. They just stick to what they know.
But these stressful moments cause them to "reboot" with what they learned from the experience.
They get a new world view. They evolved into a less problematic and more nuanced version of themselves.
And often feel a lot of guilt about their previous "version"
They didn't know they where problematic before. It never occurred to them.
Like any human they are learning as they go.
I need the good people of mastodon to help New Hampshire spread this news so it reaches outside of New England. Ryan Murdough of the White Nationalist network is intimidating BIPOC state representatives https://www.seacoastonline.com/story/nletter/exeter-news-letter/2022/11/18/nh-ag-investigates-after-newmarket-state-rep-threatened-by-racist-email/69652615007/ help us get this news out since our local newspapers are all bought and paid for to silence this from leaving the state. #nhpolitics
Parenting neurodivergent, question for advice - At two years old my own daughter was still breastfeeding, so I would lie with her and let her feed which helped her drift off. Suckling seemed to involve a fair bit of effort and I would feel her body get warmer as she drifted off. We took care to ensure she wasn’t over-wrapped as she would wake up again not long after if she got too hot under the covers.
When you're disabled in this world, you have to give yourself grace. You have to make self-compassion a habit, because so often the world will fail to show you compassion--or more likely, actively beat you down. And so you have to practice loving yourself, caring for yourself, trusting yourself, valuing yourself *double*, to make up for what the abled society we live in so often refuses to provide.
That's why self-love, when you're disabled, is a radical
act. Self-love is, in fact, revolution. It's being on the sharp end of all that ableist hate and countering it with compassion and celebration and pride.

Today I re-start chemo without my previous option for autoinjector because my insurance no longer covers it. The smaller syringes were on 3 month back order (supply chain issues) so I’m using a size up. Ugh. I’m sad, tired, now speaking to the abyss of my 0 followers (bc Twitter is 👎🏻). Is there anyone here for me to build community with? #disabled #chronicpain #disability #HenochSchönleinawareness
@autismsupsoc I used "functioning" on purpose because it is what rubs me the wrong way all the time... that in the whole way of diagnosing a lot of character traits and personality are just labeled as if people were machines who can be functioning or broken while never taking into account that perhaps the whole idea of categorizing people is flawed to start with.

#Democrats voted Friday to remove #Iowa as the first state on the presidential nominating calendar & replace it w/ #SouthCarolina starting in 2024, a dramatic shakeup championed by President Joe #Biden to better reflect the party’s deeply diverse electorate.
The committee approved moving South Carolina’s #primary to Feb. 3 & having #Nevada & #NewHampshire vote 3 days later. #Georgia would go the following week & #Michigan 2 weeks after that.

Not all church records are on ScotlandsPeople! A starting point to find which church denominations existed in a particular parish is to consult the Statistical Accounts of #Scotland from the 1790s & 1830s, via https://stataccscot.edina.ac.uk/static/statacc/dist/home. Once you have established if there are other congregations beyond those of the Kirk, you can try to find their records using archive catalogues such as that of the National Records of Scotland at https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/. #genealogy #Geneadons #FamilyHistory

Well said. I got diagnosed just last year. I built my autism resource site because of the struggles I went through to learn more. There is a playlist with autistic people discussing this topic you might find helpful. 💛

if only it was a simple as ticking boxes to confirm if I fall on the autism spectrum and where. I hit probably about 80% of those aspects or variations of them. Such as making eye contact I tend to look away because i know people get annoyed or aggressive when I stare at them or something near them too long. Or being overwhelmed by the noise of a crowd and only able to focus if there is something engaging enough. So many frameworks I had to overcome these until now.

@JGibbard @joesabin @peppernut @vashti @simon @RosethornRangerTTV @gillianography @CGBrooding @actuallyautistic I don't do medication, but not because it didn't work - it did. I take other medicines that can't play nice with the usual prescriptions for ND because of my heart. So my neurodiversity is all natural all of the time and yikes its an uphill battle.

The biggest challenges for me in the workplace are my social anxiety and the requirement for interviews when I have selective mutism. Also, almost every criteria says "good communication skills" or whatever and being autistic, I don't think I stand a chance lol. So I haven't got a job. I want to work but I know I would struggle unless they really knew every part of me and made adjustments for my selective mutism, which they probably wouldn't, because they require good communication.
I also have cripplingly low self-esteem and mental health issues from my childhood that never really got fixed so I would be that person that can only work every other day and needs to leave after lunch so I can nap. I just don't think any job would want me when there are so many other candidates without my difficulties. Just wish I had more confidence and less anxiety!
