Folks: Elon Musk is now targeting MeidasTouch on Twitter. It’s more important than ever that we grow our platform here on Mastodon. Please consider boosting this post and telling everyone you know to follow us. Thank you for your support!

If you buy my books I hope they entertain you. Any music you're given, I hope it suffuses you. If there's a painting or really cool graffiti crossing your eyes, I hope it roots you to the spot. I hope, as we go into 2023, a better notion of the future possesses you. A good future. One that you're not fearful of or creating fear in. I hope you realize if there ain't no beauty you got to create some beauty. I hope whatever gods flit above and swim below have mercy. Here's to your bright smile.

When I'm stuck, I do "housekeeping" on my ancestry trees. I inherited my account from my mother, and in the beginning I was a little sloppy myself. So now that I've committed to particular standard formats for place names and dates, I traverse a branch of the tree and reformat those, and make sure the sources are properly cited, and check any new hints. I almost always end up finding some new #genealogy information.

@thedogspaw @DAR31337 @divergentiafaux @actuallyautistic I tried ritalin as an adult and it was erratic in how I responded, some days were great, other days not working as well, but the worst thing which was absolutely horrible was when it wore off at night. There was a classic rebound effect where my ADHD lack of focus came back with a vengeance, and my mind would slide all over the place and I didn't know what was happening at first.

@theautisticcoach
I'm struggling with the thought of telling my (young adult) children that I'm #ActuallyAutistic. I'm anticipating the two questions that fill me with utter dread: 'Since when?' and 'Says who?'. I just know that I'll get angry and kill the conversation then meltdown for days. I'm neither embarrassed nor ashamed just HATE answering questions. How do I do it whilst protecting myself mentally?

Any 1password replacement recs?

Recent updates have been kind of trash. They completely rewrote their clients and in so doing, dropped a bunch of existing features. And made desktop search substantially more awkward. (I think this came out of unifying mobile and desktop ux, always a terrible decision.)

(Feature wise, it's got some super nice components, especially in the integration with Fastmail's "Masked Email" feature which is stunningly good. The integration with the privacy.com limited-use-cc-numbers is also pretty neat, but less useful for boring financial reasons.)

Pre-1password I was a keybase over Bittorrent Sync user, but the trivial cross-platform support of 1password and the full autofill integration across platforms is what originally sold me on the switch. So I'd like to at least not lose those.

Today we had a major win. For years my youngest #actuallyautistic daughter has been doing dance and now singing. Every time we got to a recital she would freeze with terror and refuse to go on stage.

Afterwards, she would always be regretful that as she put it was a "big chicken”. We always told her not to worry it will happen when it was ready to happen.

Today she surprised everyone, but most of all herself when she made it on stage and through the full performance.

“You're comprised of 84 minerals, 23 Elements & 8galls of water spread over 38 trillion cells.

You're built from nothing by the spare parts of the Earth you've consumed according to a set of instructions hidden in a double helix, small enough to be carried by a sperm.

You're recycled butterflies, plants, rocks, streams, firewood, wolf fur & shark teeth, broken down to their smallest parts & rebuilt into our planets most complex living thing.

You're not living on Earth, you are Earth.”

@avuko @divergentiafaux @actuallyautistic Thanks for the examples! I match 17 of these 27; I suspect that I have autistic spectrum disorder, but never attempted a diagnostic. I'm more expressive writing than speaking.

@obrerx @actuallyautistic Autism and trauma certainly overlap in how they're expressed. I have PTSD and my husband is certain he has a mild form of autism. We've meshed well since the day we met.Just being understood makes it easier to cope with daily life. You shouldn't judge yourself for not handling things the way you think you should.

@DAR31337 @divergentiafaux Autistics tend to create and follow routines, are often methodical, tend to do things the same way each time, including things like washing the dishes or ordinary tasks. This is what separates it from being purely from trauma. It's more of finding comfort in sameness, finding something consistent in an otherwise chaotic world that is always on the edge of overwhelm. It's anchoring perhaps, and it also helps us navigate through the constant changes going on around us by finding "rules" to guide us through. The world seems always changing, we try to find islands of consistency. That's what it seems like to me, anyway. I first discovered I was ADHD some 22 years ago, then realized there was more going on, and was later diagnosed as autistic as well.

I just wanted to say how happy I am here at Mastodon. People here are decidedly human. Kind humans. Ones that are able to have a conversation without spewing propaganda. Ones that respect one another. Being here gives me hope that all isn't lost, and that there are enough of us to make the world brighter.

Please, everyone, keep this alive. We need discourse. We need kindness. We need each other.

It's now 701 days since Donald Trump's Jan 6 terrorist attack. Not only has Trump not been charged with even one crime, he's now running for President where he's actively spewing more lies to delegitimize our democracy.
Long past Time for Merrick Garland to INDICT TRUMP!!

PSA: Please remember that the ActuallyAutistic hashtag is for people who are themselves autistic. It should not be used by the parents, siblings, cousins, friends, doctors, teachers, psychologists, occupational therapists, or anything else of autistic people.

Most of us have had more than enough of people talking about and for us while not letting us speak for ourselves. Listen and let us be heard. We are autistic, and we are using this hashtag for our actual lived experiences.
