#AskingAutistics

Did any of you have an overall positive experience in any level of education? Do any of you thrive in academic settings?

#ActuallyAutistic

@maxiemoosie as an undiagnosed everything School was a chore unless I liked the class and then I was good. College was the same way, no wonder it took me 7 years to get my BA.

@ZebraOnWheels You might need to get a different style of mask. There are lots of options in full face ones if that’s what you need. And I find a bit of white noise drowns out the machine sounds and really helps me to get to sleep. I use a fan to provide the white noise. Hope that helps.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix I think it's growing pains. Everything's slow today. I've seen some server errors.

One day last week I couldn't log in. I tried several times during the day and kept getting, "We're sorry but something went wrong on our end." The next day everything was fine.🤷🏻‍♀️

I cannot wait for the days to start getting longer again next week. I do not thrive with a 4:30pm sunset.

URGENT!!! Twitter is now BANNING all accounts that link to Mastodon. A mass purging of pro-democracy Twitter accounts appears imminent. Please consider BOOSTING this post and encourage everyone to follow us to help us build up this platform so we can continue to spread our pro-democracy messages. This is not a drill!

Clarification on Frozen.

Frozen isn’t a *great* romance but it’s an extremely Autistic film with all the main characters showing Autistic traits …

From most to least typically Autsitic … (Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff, Anna) …

And Anna and Kristoff have a cute, traditional, and actually realistic screw ball comedy Autistic romance …

We have lots going on, and we're completely broke.
We have just gotten nine #transgender people out of danger. 4 of those by getting them asylum in the Netherlands.
We are absolutely desperate for funds, folks. We're currently funding operations from our personal rent money.
Please boost this, we've never been this desperate.

My close friends are neurodivergent people too so definitely recommend that as a route

Have you looked into groups (IRL or online) for neurodivergent or autistic or ADHD adults/young adults in your area? Failing this finding online or IRL groups for your special interests in your area can be a good place to start too

Agd regardless of what that looks like for an individual we're all equally autistic

Attempts to assign degrees of severity/autism are just the high/low functioning labels with a different skin on it with the same inherent issues

"Low severity/least autistic"(High functioning) people are denied the support they need as these labels minimise the challenges they face in a neurotypical focused society

"High severity/most autistic"(low functioning) people have their ability for self determination and autonomy minimised or negated as their high support needs are equated with lack of intelligence/understanding/cognitive ability or their personal needs

Both of these situations are incredibly harmful and problematic for those affected

Speaking from experience as a "high functioning" autistic who received no support as a kid and had it profoundly impact my life as an adult

Also, I had well over 8k followers on #twitter but seem to have much more engagement here on #mastodon already and I only have 28 #followers so far so IDK why that is but it’s a good thing. Sometimes twitter felt like you were shouting into a void even though your statistics would show you had tons of views.

That said, whenever possible people should accommodate disability and ideally be open about it.

In our humble opinion, observing society, People should not use disability as an explanation *after the fact* but ideally should be open about disability prior to an *unfortunate event*

In a more responsible society, disabled people should feel safe to be open with their disabilities and be able to openly request necessary accommodations ahead of problematic events.

Substances influence our experience of ADHD. Stimulant medication, for example, helps many ADHD'ers manage their symptoms.

Alcohol, because of its effects on brain regions related to executive functioning, balance, and attention can often make ADHD symptoms worse.

At the same time, alcohol can reduce stimulation needs and lower reliance on anxious coping strategies for some people, making the interaction between alcohol and ADHD particularly complex
