I saw this on @scalzi ‘s Whatever blog, and was intrigued enough to buy a copy.

The fact alone that every recipe tells you whether you can freeze or can it (I never thought of canning full meals??) makes it invaluable to everyone.

The specific advice on how to accommodate different disabilities, and the history of colonization of some of the foods, is also pretty awesome.

Highly recommend this new cookbook by @geekyjules !

Hello genealogy people of mastodon. I’m here to chat all things genealogy related - my background is mainly Scottish/uk records but also European, immigration/emigration. Just finished MSc at Strathclyde uni.

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic my low gain hearing aids for #AuditoryProcessingDisorder have been a metaphorical godsend for this. I get way less overloaded/over stimulated since I got them.

Blue light blocking glasses work similarly for me in those awful fluorescent lighting scenarios, though somewhat less effectively, but much cheaper

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics If you do another AuDHD group and I have the spare cash I’ll be happy to sign up.

for me (from observing my #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD self and my various ND friends and family)

#Autism is #ADHD plus:

* low awareness/control/respect of nonverbal social/emotional/timing signals (incoming and outgoing)

* emphasis on rational/logical explanations for events and behaviors over emotional/social explanations

* avoid eye contact, retreat from social encounters during stress

* high empathy, concerned about fairness and diversity vs arbitrary rules esp. around social hierarchy and manners

* difficulty telling lies or going along with unfair/imperfect directions

* inclined to follow rules (as long as they're fair and clear), difficulty recognizing sarcasm

Both have:

* impulsiveness, distraction, low boredom tolerance

* hyperfocus

* creativity and lateral thinking

* comorbid anxiety and depression and sleep problems

The relatively new term #Monotropism is probably a real thing and embraces both.

One of the things that made Twitter so powerful was its ability to amplify calls for grassroots activism— it's time to see if Mastodon can deliver the goods, too: if you want to help send the message that fascists should not be given a national platform to spew their hateful rhetoric: open Apple News (or your Android equivalent) and block the *CNN Politics* channel

My employer, Shopify, announced layoffs today and I've been affected. If you're looking for someone with deep experience with developer tooling and developer environments, I'd love to work with you. I've spent the last two years building Shopify's in-house cloud developer environment, and I have extensive experience building developer tools as one of members of the Homebrew package manager's Project Leadership Committee.

@Pawpower Another option might be to talk to one of your groups and see if there is a subset that might be willing to meet with this person as a special event type of thing.

Maybe that way you could have a group that is prepared for the different feelings and the group has some cohesion and also can as a group handle the dysregulation that likely would result.

That way this person can see some real interaction but have it a be a more intentionally planned group.

RT @RubensSandwich
I was laid off today from @Shopify.

If anyone is looking for a Senior FE engineer who specializes in accessibility my DMs are open.

That is terrible. My experience was so different to that.
In primary school I was not seen as intelligent:
I was socially withdrawn and anxious.
I was very unstimulated and bored-problems with executive function
I struggled getting my thoughts down on paper and verbally.
Things improved at secondary school as chemistry and history became my special interests

@lindsaymakesvideos Australian #ActuallyAutistic people can get this one for free autismspectrum.org.au/alert-ca

you can also make your own if you have design skills and specific things you need.

I found most of the etsy ones offensive in being cutesy and "can I have an accommodation pls uwu". some even had puzzle pieces.

all autistics should also carry a list of current medications with pictures for hospital's easy access in an emergency (don't assume hospitals will be familiar with everything used off label). a visual pain scale is helpful if you are or become non verbal.

ask for the disability liaison at your hospital if they have one or the patient advocate, as assuming nobody has training on autism is a necessary thing. have this on your card as well.

@ashleyspencer One of the things I would recommend for your store is looking to see if you have any other options for shipping. For some reason your current shipper has a problem that when the package gets to my local area they can’t seem to either have the right address on it or the label must be damaged. I would love to order stuff from your store and pay for different shipping to guarantee I can get the products delivered.

@dramypsyd as someone who has been assessed for both in the recent past I would say the answer is yes. I have many connections in our space who want to get assessed but can’t due to the cost and also provider’s who don’t understand that there are multiple presentations of both differences.
