When you're disabled in this world, you have to give yourself grace. You have to make self-compassion a habit, because so often the world will fail to show you compassion--or more likely, actively beat you down. And so you have to practice loving yourself, caring for yourself, trusting yourself, valuing yourself *double*, to make up for what the abled society we live in so often refuses to provide.

That's why self-love, when you're disabled, is a radical
act. Self-love is, in fact, revolution. It's being on the sharp end of all that ableist hate and countering it with compassion and celebration and pride.

Today I re-start chemo without my previous option for autoinjector because my insurance no longer covers it. The smaller syringes were on 3 month back order (supply chain issues) so I’m using a size up. Ugh. I’m sad, tired, now speaking to the abyss of my 0 followers (bc Twitter is 👎🏻). @autismsupsoc I used "functioning" on purpose because it is what rubs me the wrong way all the time... that in the whole way of diagnosing a lot of character traits and personality are just labeled as if people were machines who can be functioning or broken while never taking into account that perhaps the whole idea of categorizing people is flawed to start with.

Not all church records are on ScotlandsPeople! A starting point to find which church denominations existed in a particular parish is to consult the Statistical Accounts of #Scotland from the 1790s & 1830s, via https://stataccscot.edina.ac.uk/static/statacc/dist/home. Once you have established if there are other congregations beyond those of the Kirk, you can try to find their records using archive catalogues such as that of the National Records of Scotland at https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/. #genealogy #Geneadons #FamilyHistory

Genealogy rarely disappoints. Last night I have connected a genealogist using Mastodon who lives on the other side of the world with a school friend after she posted a newspaper article about his family. It turns out they are cousins and are going to exchange information🌳

if only it was a simple as ticking boxes to confirm if I fall on the autism spectrum and where. I hit probably about 80% of those aspects or variations of them. Such as making eye contact I tend to look away because i know people get annoyed or aggressive when I stare at them or something near them too long. Or being overwhelmed by the noise of a crowd and only able to focus if there is something engaging enough. So many frameworks I had to overcome these until now.

I take other medicines that can't play nice with the usual prescriptions for ND because of my heart. So my neurodiversity is all natural all of the time and yikes its an uphill battle.

The biggest challenges for me in the workplace are my social anxiety and the requirement for interviews when I have selective mutism. Also, almost every criteria says "good communication skills" or whatever and being autistic, I don't think I stand a chance lol. So I haven't got a job. I want to work but I know I would struggle unless they really knew every part of me and made adjustments for my selective mutism, which they probably wouldn't, because they require good communication.

I also have cripplingly low self-esteem and mental health issues from my childhood that never really got fixed so I would be that person that can only work every other day and needs to leave after lunch so I can nap. I just don't think any job would want me when there are so many other candidates without my difficulties. Just wish I had more confidence and less anxiety!

When looking at the 1921 census records, you may find additonal information on the free header page (found via a link at the top of an entry from the census). In this case my great uncle John Paton was noted as a lodger and belt maker for R&J Dicks in Glasgow, but no address listed, just a long list of names. The header page notes he was with the Queen's Own Regiment Yeomanry, in camp and under canvas at Lanark Race Course, Lanark. #genealogy #FamilyHistory #1921census #Scotland #StAndrewsDay
