I saw this on @scalzi ‘s Whatever blog, and was intrigued enough to buy a copy.

The fact alone that every recipe tells you whether you can freeze or can it (I never thought of canning full meals??) makes it invaluable to everyone.

The specific advice on how to accommodate different disabilities, and the history of colonization of some of the foods, is also pretty awesome.

Highly recommend this new cookbook by @geekyjules !

Hello genealogy people of mastodon. I’m here to chat all things genealogy related - my background is mainly Scottish/uk records but also European, immigration/emigration. Just finished MSc at Strathclyde uni.

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic my low gain hearing aids for #AuditoryProcessingDisorder have been a metaphorical godsend for this. I get way less overloaded/over stimulated since I got them.

Blue light blocking glasses work similarly for me in those awful fluorescent lighting scenarios, though somewhat less effectively, but much cheaper

for me (from observing my #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD self and my various ND friends and family)

#Autism is #ADHD plus:

* low awareness/control/respect of nonverbal social/emotional/timing signals (incoming and outgoing)

* emphasis on rational/logical explanations for events and behaviors over emotional/social explanations

* avoid eye contact, retreat from social encounters during stress

* high empathy, concerned about fairness and diversity vs arbitrary rules esp. around social hierarchy and manners

* difficulty telling lies or going along with unfair/imperfect directions

* inclined to follow rules (as long as they're fair and clear), difficulty recognizing sarcasm

Both have:

* impulsiveness, distraction, low boredom tolerance

* hyperfocus

* creativity and lateral thinking

* comorbid anxiety and depression and sleep problems

The relatively new term #Monotropism is probably a real thing and embraces both.

One of the things that made Twitter so powerful was its ability to amplify calls for grassroots activism— it's time to see if Mastodon can deliver the goods, too: if you want to help send the message that fascists should not be given a national platform to spew their hateful rhetoric: open Apple News (or your Android equivalent) and block the *CNN Politics* channel

My employer, Shopify, announced layoffs today and I've been affected. If you're looking for someone with deep experience with developer tooling and developer environments, I'd love to work with you. I've spent the last two years building Shopify's in-house cloud developer environment, and I have extensive experience building developer tools as one of members of the Homebrew package manager's Project Leadership Committee.

That is terrible. My experience was so different to that.
In primary school I was not seen as intelligent:
I was socially withdrawn and anxious.
I was very unstimulated and bored-problems with executive function
I struggled getting my thoughts down on paper and verbally.
Things improved at secondary school as chemistry and history became my special interests

@ashleyspencer One of the things I would recommend for your store is looking to see if you have any other options for shipping. For some reason your current shipper has a problem that when the package gets to my local area they can’t seem to either have the right address on it or the label must be damaged. I would love to order stuff from your store and pay for different shipping to guarantee I can get the products delivered.

If you're watching the #axecon talk from Shell Little, I highly recommend working with her.

She has been instrumental in my career growth. She has helped me successfully navigate being an accessibility and inclusivity designer. And I'm so lucky for it.

Because she helped in ways I didn't even know I needed, in ways that have helped protect me from burnout.

That is essential for any accessibility professional. We all need this kind of support.

Slowly losing your ability to mask autism (and/or other neurodivergence) is a sign you might be burning out.

Masking is a survival strategy, but it is also extremely energy intensive.

Being unable to mask likely means you don't have the energy necessary

ADHD often comes in a bundle offer. Born with ADHD, get anxiety, depression, or a learning disability for free.

While some of the conditions bundled with ADHD are also developmental or congenital, some (such as depression and anxiety) can occur as a RESULT of ADHD as well

I think Mastodon is a lifeline for many of us in the #ActuallyAutistic community. It may be harder to make friends, surrounded by neurotypicals in real life, and/or disabled and isolated.

I’m the same as many of us. No friends locally, only 2 people I’m close to + my partner, and also disabled and isolated. My biggest socialization is video chat and my cats.

Mastodon is great for us. I’ve enjoyed talking to you all every day.
